Inquiry-based lab analyzes antioxidant contents in tea, suggesting a creative learning approach for students.
An inquiry-based lab was created to measure and analyze the antioxidant contents in different teas using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) over two 4-hour periods for second- or third-year chemistry students. Students become conversant with the instrument’s capacity thru method devolvement. They also learn about sample preparation, calibration methods, identification, and quantification of an unknown through measurements of antioxidants. A project/inquiry-based lab offers insight into independent research with more opportunities for creativity than traditional labs where students are guided with procedural steps.
