Exercises explore hyperfine structure to calculate nuclear spin in rhenium(I) for chemistry students, emphasizing quantum concepts.
An example and two exercises are presented that use hyperfine structure (HFS) to calculate the nuclear spin (I). The example uses the visible spectrum of a 187rhenium(I) atomic emission at 527.7 nm. The spectrum of the rhenium(I) (8P5/2 → 6S5/2) transition was recorded with a Fourier-Transform spectrometer with 0.026 cm-1 resolution. This exercise for upper-level chemistry majors serves as an introduction to the coupling of the quantum momenta associated with the total electronic angular momentum (J) and I.
