Examines core beliefs influencing teaching practices in TESOL, suggesting self-awareness enhances openness to new ideas.
This paper explores the depth of core beliefs and how teachers struggle with values that might have taken root in childhood, in their own learning and finally in their teaching. Becoming aware of how these values affect teachers’ priorities and actions in the classroom is an important step in understanding the concept of core beliefs and how they are situated within the realm of theory and practice. This paper explores three core beliefs of one teacher and how she comes to terms with each one by determining its relevance in the field of TESOL research. This paper suggests that exploring ones beliefs, while having respect for others, can help us to better articulate our thoughts and be open to new ideas.
