This article argues for the New Covenant's foundation in Tanakh, highlighting command-promise relationships.
This article argues that the New-Covenant horizon is already laid out in Tanakh; therefore the New Covenant must be read through that horizon. The control texts are Deut 30:1-10, Jer 31:31-34, Ezek 36:25-27, and Isa 8:16-20. In these texts, command and promise do not compete. Yehovah commands shema, shuv, ahavah, and Covenant fruit. Yehovah also promises heart-circumcision, inward Torahwriting, cleansing, a new heart, a new ruach, yirah in the heart, and caused Covenant walk in his chuqqim and mishpatim. This pattern is then demonstrated through selected command/promise pairings in Torah and the Prophets. The result is simple: the New-Covenant horizon is already laid out in Tanakh.
