Literary contribution reveals translation strategies of Ariosto's works in England, suggesting their importance.
Henry Richard Fox, Lord Holland (1773–1840), is a figure much more familiar in political than in literary history. Of his numerous literary works, his attractive English translations of Ariosto have been lost to view. His versions of Orlando furioso, Canto XXV, and of Ariosto’s Satire 7, were originally printed as appendices to the complete Furioso translation by William Stewart Rose in 1827, and introduced by Rose as examples of translation strategies alternative to his own, especially regarding metre. Texts of the two translations are included in this contribution.
