Archaeology and Excavation of Thessaloniki’s uncovered areas: aiming to Unveil the Hidden Utopias of the Subconscious Mind

The word “design” has been expanded. Thessaloniki [a city filled with historical layers and uncharted terri¬toties] is the main focus of this research approach, as new archaeological excavations constantly be revealed, significantly unknown aspects of the city’s past. A city with a strong historical stratification, where it hosts a series of uncovered areas and underground routes that constitute its cultural substratum. These areas, which are linked to ancient cultural layers, reveal unknown dimensions of the past, offer a unique opportunity to combine archaeology with modern architectural design. Archaeological research, when integrated into modern architecture, can be the stepping stones for the creation of a new, interdisciplinary approach to cutting-edge design, which examines the city’s subconscious and its hidden nature. Theories around the concept of the “sub¬conscious” offer a new dimension to the understanding of the city as a living organism, where the “hidden” el¬ements of the past continue to influence and shape the present.With the help of modern technology, such as dig¬ital models, algorithmic sequences/patterns, Artificial Intelligence and their innumerable possibilities, we can (now) highlight and redefine the relationship of modern people with their past, creating new, utopian landscapes that integrate the past into the present (i.e. for the future). Through the specially designed algorithms, with data based on human reactions, they show the connection between spaces and desires, and are constantly adapted to the needs of the users. An environment that captures these invisible, psychological pathways and at the same time, allows the user to get in touch with the intricate connections and uncharted areas of his subconscious. It foreground the unknown corners of the city and transforms them into new, utopian compositions, where the past and the future interact with the present. How is life defined? Therefore, the uncharted movements of the human subconscious mind, combined with the computing power and potential of Artificial Intelligence, lead to an architectural result that incorporates the inner dynamics of the subconscious and expresses it through space in a way that evokes an authentic sense of renewal and connection.
