Abstract

A BSTRACT Background: Menopause, cessation of woman’s reproduction otherwise can happen early by hysterectomy might need therapeutic attention, as it disturbs psychosomatic health by interruption in the hormonal physiology. Herbs rich in phytoestrogens like Convolvulus pluricaulis Choisy, known as Shankhapushpi in Ayurveda , are better nonhormonal alternatives to manage such conditions. Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of C. pluricaulis in posthysterectomy menopausal syndrome. Materials and Methods: In this randomized controlled pilot trial, 30 women who underwent hysterectomy (before attaining natural menopause) meeting the inclusion criteria with a minimum menopause rating scale (MRS) score of 5 and a Modified Kupperman’s Index (MKI) score of 7, were randomized into two groups. 15 subjects of the control group received Asparagus racemosus Willd powder, and 15 subjects of the interventional group received C. pluricaulis powder, 6 g twice daily, respectively, after food with lukewarm water for a period of 45 days. Study outcome was evaluated through primary measures MRS, MKI, and Menopause-Specific Quality of Life (MS-QoL) on baseline, 15 th , 30 th , and 45 th day, whereas Serum estrogen and secondary measure Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) on baseline and 45 th day. Statistical results were expressed through Independent and Dependent t -tests. Results: Study results revealed that both interventions were comparable and each produced significant improvement ( P < 0.001) in MRS, MKI, MS-QoL, and HARS. C. pluricaulis has shown nonsignificant results in improving the serum estrogen levels ( P = 0.334) compared to A. racemosus ( P < 0.001). Conclusions: C. pluricaulis was beneficial in managing posthysterectomy menopausal syndrome, assessed through MRS, MKI, MS-QoL, and HARS. It was also helpful in maintaining stable estrogen levels, suggesting its possible efficacy as a nonhormonal herbal medicine.
