This analysis reveals structural properties causing AI hallucination, suggesting an epistemological approach for solutions.
In 2025, independent mathematical results established formal constraints on large language model reliability — hallucination is not a training artefact but a structural property of the architecture. This paper argues the root cause is epistemological, not engineering, and proposes that Advaita Vedantic and Nyaya epistemology provides the diagnostic framework and architectural principles to address it. The Vedantic Pramana framework identifies six irreducible knowledge pathways (Pratyaksha, Anumana, Shabda, Upamana, Arthapatti, Anupalabdhi), each with explicit validity conditions and distinct failure modes. We present a Pramana-based AI architecture implementing these six modules, orchestrated by a Sakshi (witness-awareness) metacognitive verification layer. The framework's diagnostic power is demonstrated across four failure domains: fabricated legal citations, autonomous vehicle fatalities, racial bias in medical AI, and hallucinated scientific references.
