Geonuts maps geolocation data to NUTS regions, suggesting a simple tool for researchers and analysts.
Most European territorial data (e.g., Eurostat indicators) is published for regions defined by the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS). The geonuts R package addresses the recurring research task of linking individual-level geolocation data—such as survey responses, firm locations, or mobility traces—to standardised NUTS regions (levels 0–3). The package implements vectorised point-in-polygon matching using Eurostat geospatial layers, with an optional nearest-neighbour fallback for points located near or outside polygon boundaries. The main contributions of the package are: (i) a simple, reproducible R interface for geolocation-to-NUTS assignment that integrates directly with existing spatial and data-access ecosystems, including sf , eurostat , and the broader tidyverse ; (ii) a flexible two-stage matching strategy with built-in diagnostic output covering boundary-edge and near-coastal cases; and (iii) a built-in visualisation function for rapid spatial validation of results. geonuts is available on CRAN, with source code hosted on GitHub.
