Key Points

  • This research examines the health impacts of fish consumption compared to potential contaminants.
  • Evaluated major health outcomes related to fish intake among adults and women of childbearing age.
  • Analyzed the strength of evidence and magnitudes of health effects based on fish consumption.
  • Findings indicate that benefits of fish consumption exceed risks for adults.
  • Benefits of modest fish intake in women of childbearing age also surpass associated risks, barring a few species.

Abstract

For major health outcomes among adults, based on both the strength of the evidence and the potential magnitudes of effect, the benefits of fish intake exceed the potential risks. For women of childbearing age, benefits of modest fish intake, excepting a few selected species, also outweigh risks.
