Abstract The year of 2023 saw the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) global weather forecasting models. In a real‐time operational forecasting context, the performance of AI‐based global models Pangu‐Weather and FengWu in the extended‐range beyond 10 days and up to 15 days ahead is reviewed in this paper, with emphasis on significant weather impacting eastern and southern China. We find that AI models may extend the global forecast range, in certain skill categories, by a couple of days beyond the 240h range when compared to conventional numerical weather prediction models.
