Magnetic properties of complex salts containing paramagnetic ions of transition elements are studied on the crystalline field model. Strong cubic crystalline field splits d -orbital into d γ and d ε , and the magnetism is due to incomplete d ε shells. The crystalline field is assumed to have, besides cubic part, a component of tetragonal or trigonal symmetry, comparable in magnitude with spin-orbit interaction. Energy level structures, g -values of the ground state and magnetic susceptibilities are calculated for ( d ε ) n configurations 1≤ n ≤5. The effective numbers of Bohr magnetons, which measure the magnetic susceptibility, are obtained as explicit functions of two parameters \(x{=}{r²}A/7kT\) and y =λ/2 k T , where A is the coefficient of tetragonal or trigonal field, and λ the constant of spin-orbit coupling. The result is applied to the discussion of magnetic properties of K 3 Fe(CN) 6 and K 3 Mn(CN) 6 . In Appendix, it is shown that the result for the field of trigonal symmetry becomes equivalent to that for the field of tetragonal symmetry.
