Measurements of oxygen consumption rates were made for both fed and unfed yellowfin sole ( Limanda aspera (Pallas)) to examine the role of fish weight and temperature on respiration rate. At 5.5°C, VO 2 for unfed fish of 3 to 603 g was described by the equation: ml 0 2 ind −1 h −1 = 0.014 (wet wt. g) + 0.33: r 2 = 0.95. An increase in environmental temperature between 1.5 and 10°C resulted in a linear increase in rates of oxygen consumption. The relationship between temperature and VO 2 for 40- to 70-g unfed sole was μl 0 2 g −1 = 3.875(°C) + 4.023; r 2 = 0.99. After a single feeding of 1% or 3% of body weight, oxygen consumption rates increased about 38% over unfed rates.
