A fluorescence-based digital image correlation technique allows real-time measurement of nanoscale deformations using fluorescent nanoparticles. To demonstrate the capabilities of the method, the complex deformation fields generated around silica microspheres embedded in an elastomer under tensile loading are characterized. Displacement resolutions of 20 nm are obtained over a 100×100 μm field of view (see image).
