This work deals with the speed control of three phase squirrel cage induction motor (IM) based on Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) scheme. The Proportional - Integral (PI) speed controller of conventional IFOC is replaced with Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) in this work and performance by both are compared. Simulation results show that the IFOC scheme with PI Controller presents good performance under steady state if its gain parameters are tuned perfectly for that operating condition. In the proposed topology, SMC with hyperbolic tangent function is used as switching function aiming a reduction in chattering effect. Simulation results shows that SMC based IM drives are capable of developing high dynamic performance in wide speed range applications and is robust to external disturbances and parametric variations. Simulation experiments under different operating conditions are carried out using MATLAB/ SIMULINK software to validate the effectiveness of the controller.
