An outbreak of an unusual cutaneous disease was during 1986-1987 in about 200 persons, children, in a few neighbourhoods of the town Liberia, Guanacaste Province, north-west Costa . Most of the cases were from Nazareth, a , developed in 1978, with about 1200 , at least 5% of whom are Nicaraguan immigrants. Scattered cases have been recognized since 1976 and at that time the disease was identified as infantile tuberculoid leprosy.
