Defining the healthy "core microbiome" of oral microbial communities

EZEgija ZauraBKBart J. F. KeijserSHSusan M. Huse

Key Points

  • To determine the diversity and individuality of human oral microbial communities using high-resolution sequencing and evaluate whether a healthy core microbiome exists.
  • Profiled oral microbial communities from unrelated healthy individuals using next-generation sequencing.
  • Evaluated sequence overlap and diversity to assess the extent of shared bacterial sequences across subjects.
  • A major proportion of oral bacterial sequences is identical across unrelated healthy individuals.
  • High-resolution sequencing provides qualitative evidence supporting the existence of a common core oral microbiome in healthy individuals.

Abstract

We obtained the first insight into the diversity and uniqueness of individual oral microbiomes at a resolution of next-generation sequencing. We showed that a major proportion of bacterial sequences of unrelated healthy individuals is identical, supporting the concept of a core microbiome at health.
