Case report uncovers prolonged survival after tracheotomy for tracheal obstruction in a neonate, suggesting vital intervention timing.
The manifestations of tracheal stenosis are related to the degree of severity. An infant with partial atresia of the trachea was moribund prior to tracheotomy performed in the delivery room. Diagnostic clinical clues are emphasized, as time would not allow radiologic confirmation in this case. The relief of obstruction was accompanied by response to ventilation and a dramatic outpouring of lung fluid, confirming the congenital airway obstruction.
