An amphiphilic ruthenium benzylidene metathesis catalyst 3 was prepared using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)-substituted pyridine ligands. This new catalyst is found to effectively polymerize cyclic olefins both in organic solvents and in water, demonstrating a high level of versatility and providing potential for new future studies in aqueous-based ROMP and other metathesis chemistries.
