High-resolution Fourier transform spectrometry has been used to record laser-excited fluorescence of the Na 2 molecule in the infrared between 3500 and 10 000 cm −1 . This has led to the characterization of a new, double-minimum, state (2) [Formula: see text] Levels of the inner potential of this state are probed by direct excitation by ultraviolet lines of krypton-ion and argon-ion lasers, while levels of the outer well and levels above the potential maximum are identified in two-photon transitions excited by a ring dye laser:[Formula: see text]Five vibrational levels of the inner well, all of the 29 levels of the outer well, and some 65 upper levels have been observed and used to construct an adiabatic potential. Constants are as follows:[Formula: see text]
