Investigates tone and intonation effects on Uspanteko, suggesting implications for discourse structure.
We investigate the effect of intonation and discourse structure on the realization of lexical tone in Us- panteko (Mayan). An H% boundary tone occurs in utterance-final position, and focus produces an upward shift in pitch register. The interaction of these phenomena with lexical tone suggests a privative [H] vs. [∅] tonal contrast for this language.
