The paper describes the role and directions of development of the Project Management Offices (PMO) in the context of holistic and comprehensive approach to project management in permanent organizations. Due to the existence of different approaches, but also the relatively short history of the PMO organizational units, the focus is on the PMI (Project Management Institute) approach whose basic standard PMBOK® Guide (Project Management Body of Knowledge) was adopted as an IEEE standard for project management (IEEE Standard 1490-2011). It points to the absence of a uniform format for the functioning of the PMO, the need for constant adjustment and improvement, and proposed individual development directions.
