The waste heat recovery system of a new diesel railcar (the first of its type) in southern Germany is the focus of this article. It has started trial operation with a prototype and is the result of a four-year research program by Voith Turbo called SteamTrac technology. Due to new exhaust regulations, there is a need for more efficient ways to increase the power output of diesel engines while compensating for the losses. With the SteamTrac technology, they expect to save 5-9% in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The steps taken to develop this technology are presented in this article.
