We briefly surveyed metal‐rich and intermetallic compounds containing metal anions that have been characterized by density functional calculations. Transition metal anions come with electron configurations ( n +1)s 2 n d 10 ( n +1)p 0 , ( n +1)s 2 n d 10 ( n +1)p 1 , and ( n +1)s 2 n d 10 ( n +1)p 2 . Their n d orbitals act asreservoirs for holding ten electrons. Thus, these anions exhibit bonding characteristics similar to those found for their main group analogues.
