Key Points

  • The aim is to understand the relationship between the Saros cycle and lunar orbit precession that leads to the 580-year eclipse cycle.
  • Developed a mathematical model of the eclipse cycle
  • Analysed the modulation of the Saros cycle with lunar orbit precession
  • Confirmed that the combination of the Saros cycle and lunar orbit precession results in a 580-year cycle of eclipses
  • Identified specific patterns in eclipse occurrences over centuries

Abstract

It is shown that the 580-year eclipse cycle occurs due to the modulation of the cycle of Saros (18.03) with a cycle of precession of the plane of the lunar orbit (18.61). The sum of these two cycles gives rise to 580 cycles of eclipses of the moon and sun. A mathematical model of this cycle has been built.
