The global commercialization of genetically modified (GM) crops started in 1996 and involved only six countries; Argentina was one of them, with the planting of 370,000 ha of glyphosate-tolerant soybean (GTS). The area planted with GM crops has grown since then by more than sixty times (2009/2010 planting data), placing Argentina as the third largest grower of biotech crops in the world with 15% of the global biotech crop area.
