We seem to be deluged with communication. By communication I mean, in the broadest sense of the term, what human beings and animals try to tell one another through sounds, visual symbols, images, and so forth. These messages are received through the senses, mostly seeing, hearing, and touch. As we divide the activities of our day between doing, making, and telling, I am willing to suggest that telling has come to occupy a pathologically large part of our time.
