Life-cycle cost models for corrosion-protection coating systems for structural steel are presented. The models are a first-construction/replacement model and a rehabilitation model considering a finite service life and perpetual service. The model development considered comparison period, price and service lives, interest rate, inflation and taxes, and sensitivity and risk analysis. Mathematical expressions are presented for the models. A Virginia bridge superstructure example is presented for painting versus a galvanized coating system considering a 75-year design life. The example illustrates the cost-effectiveness of selecting the galvanized coating system over paint for an environmental exposure condition in Virginia.
