Friedman's argument is a point of departure; he offers a standard view of invention among economists. In effect, creativity, whether in economics or elsewhere in the economy, is pushed outside the domain of economics. It is a black box about which we know little and which is not subject to explanation by conventional economic analysis. We observe such activities as entrepreneurship and creative insight, but we balk at attempting to explain them.
