SUMMARY A study was made of the records of 1,000 injured dogs and cats admitted to the Trauma Emergency service (T.E.S.) of the Small Animal Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. Results were analyzed according to species, sex, age, cause of injury, severity of injury, and mortality. When compared with the general hospital population, the T.E.S. population included significantly more males than females. The median age was 1.9 years among dogs and 1.3 years among cats. Motor vehicle accidents, animal interactions, and injuries of unknown cause accounted for 75% of all accessions. Of all animals injured, 25% sustained injuries in more than one region of the body.
