Summary. A dose—response relationship was observed in the percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa as a function of age for 2-, 6-, 12-, 18- and 25-month-old C57BL/6 male mice. Compared with values for younger mice, 25-month-old mice had a significantly (P < 0·005) higher percentage of abnormal spermatozoa (23·9 ± 2·3%) and the percentages in mice aged 12 (12·9 ± 0·7%) and 18 (14·3 ± 1·3%) months were significantly (P < 0·05) different from those of 2-month-old animals (10·5 ± 0·7%). Significant differences were not observed in the cytogenetic studies for 6-, 12-, 18- and 25-month-old mice, although 2-month-old mice had a lower frequency (P < 0·05) of chromosomal aberrations compared to 12- and 18-month-old animals.
