Excavation uncovered significant Late Iron Age remains, highlighting community engagement and historical importance.
An archaeological excavation was required by Campion Homes in advance of housing development on land at Forfar Road, Meigle, Perth & Kinross (NGR: NO 28829, 44527; Planning ref: 22/01501/FLM). This work followed on from an initial phase of evaluation work carried out across the site by Access Archaeology on behalf of Campion Homes in September to October 2022 (Gooder, 2022a). The previous evaluation revealed that the development site was largely blank but four trenches located on the west edge of the site identified numerous features of archaeological significance including a substantial curvilinear ditch and a section of stone paving. A programme of further archaeological works was undertaken to fully excavate and record the site prior to any development. The excavation revealed remains of a substantial Late Iron Age settlement including a large stone built souterrain and associated buildings. These were confirmed to overly earlier settlement remains, currently undated. Fieldwork will be followed by a programme of post-excavation works. A social media programme and a public open day were held as part of the programme for public benefit. 44 posts were undertaken over the programme period with cumulative reach/impression 79,673 with a total of 4175 engagements. This was an average of 1728 impressions and c.91 engagements per post. On Facebook, the overall impressions were 121,211 with a total engagements of 3524. This was an average of 2668 impressions and 151 engagements per post. The open day was attended by +250 individuals from the local community and further afield.
