Two categories of rewetting models for mown forage crops are considered: lumped models which consider only changes in gross forage moisture content, and distributed models which describe the absorption and runoff of surface moisture. Based on laboratory rewetting data and field rewetting data from previous authors, a lumped model is proposed in which all rainwater is initially retained up to a critical amount, after which the fraction retained decreases to a value dependent on rainfall intensity. A new distributed rewetting model is described which correctly imitates gross rewetting behaviour and which simulates the absorption and runoff of surface moisture.
