This report details the archaeological recording and evaluation of historic machinery in a workshop complex, highlighting its significance.
This report describes a programme of archaeological building recording of 71-73 St Marys Road, ShefÏeld, South Yorkshire (NGR SK 35343 86430) a workshop complex within the City Centre Conservation Area. ARCUS were commissioned by AGT to undertake an historic buildings appraisal to accompany a planning application. The site was roughly divided into two areas the first being 71-73 St Marys Road and the second being the works fronting Mary Street immediately behind. Of note is that 71-73 St Marys Street was originally formed as dwellings, separate from the adjacent industrial works. Later becoming incorporated into the works as showrooms and ofÏces, and finally converted into work space. As a result of the archaeological recording it has been possible to identify at least 5 main phases of construction, beginning in the late-nineteenth century and ending in the late-twentieth century. Much of the machinery remains, in good condition, from the later occupation of the building between 1959 and 2006.
