Overview of Module: 1) Content. This module provides background information about data in the everyday world and a basic foundation about experimental design. The module also provides instructions for how to construct data tables in Excel and google sheets, and create scatter plots, line graphs and bar charts, all within the context of the scientific method. 2) Activities. The activities consist of reflecting about the data they encounter in their daily lives, describing the steps in the scientific method surrounding a specific question, and identifying independent and dependent variables and controls. Students will also construct a data table and build a line and a bar graph. 3) Impact. Students will gain or reinforce basic data skills from high school so that they will be able to tackle quantitative coursework early in their college careers in the life sciences. Learning Objectives: Explain how to use tables and graphs to visualize and represent data Identify the types of variables that are used in data analysis Construct tables and graphs to represent data Support was provided by:Agrant from the United States National Science Foundation (DBI-RCN-UBE 2120141).
