In this work, a concentration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) ibuprofen (IBU) was selected to be effective in stimulating the growth of wheat plants Triticum aestivum L. wheat cultivar Ekada 70. The study detected that 100 μM IBU stimulated: germination energy, length, fresh and dry weight, GSH/GSSG ratio of 3-day-old plants. Along with this, 100 μM IBU was detected to have a protective effect on plant growth and antioxidant status upon subsequent 48 h exposure to 100 mM NaCl. An important contribution to the IBU—induced effects is its ability to regulate endogenous salicylic acid (SA), glutathione (GSH, GSSG) content and glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity, in normal and under stress. All this resulted in increased resistance as judged by the level of malondialdehyde in 5-day-old plants. Analysis of the dynamics of proline content in IBU—pretreated plants for 5- day and 10-day vegetation, found the drug’s ability to regulate the accumulation of this important osmoprotectant and antioxidant, in normal and under stress. This is also an IBU-induced mechanism in the realization of plant resistance.
