AbstractResearch about varietal resistance to cercopids on tropical pastures requires a permanent availability of eggs. This is the case for "salivazo" (spittlebug) Zulia colombiana, Lallemand (Homoptera: Cercopidae), wich was used for artificial infestation trials, both at laboratory and field conditions. These trials were carried out in CIAT's greenhouses and fields in Palmira, Colombia (1000 m.a.s.l. and 24°). Adequate temperature and relative humidity conditions were established for an optimum storage of eggs of Z. colombiana. In order to know the biology and development of eggs, two experiments were carried out: the first one studies the effect of dissication on the egg viability, as well as on the loss of weight and egg development. In the second experiment, 24 trials were done in several combinations of temperature and relative humidity and using eggs of 2 and 6 days old. The best egg response with eggs of 2 days were found with the combination of 20°C or 25°C with 90% of relative humidity; under these conditions a viability higher than 60% was maintained during a period of 70 days of storage. On the other hand, the combination of 25°C and 70% of R.H., a viability higher than 50% was maintained during 60 days of storage. With eggs of 6 days old, the best treatment was found with the combination of 25°C and 90% R.H., with such treatment the viability was higher than 65% during a period of 60 days. A positive relationship was found between the period of storage and the subsequent time for uncubation: the longer the storage period, the longer time needed for incubation.
