As populations age, medically vulnerable older adults increasingly rely on removable dentures for function, communication, nutrition and dignity. Denture loss, poor hygiene and unsafe practices, particularly in hospitals and care settings, can lead to malnutrition, aspiration, discomfort and psychological distress. Remaking dentures is often impractical and poor denture hygiene remains under-recognized. Dental professionals can lead preventive strategies, including staff training, care protocols, risk assessments and carer support, while advocating for safe, person-centred approaches. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Poor denture hygiene and loss in vulnerable older adults can lead to malnutrition and a reduced quality of life, making preventive dental care essential.
