Engineering composite thermochemical materials enhances storage efficiency and scalability in energy systems.
To achieve the goal of net-zero in energy systems, efficient and sustainable technologies are required to transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Thermochemical energy storage technologies can bridge the mismatch between renewable energy supply and demand and improve energy system flexibility. However, the lack of both form-stable thermochemical materials and a scalable manufacturing method hinders its development. In this study, SrBr 2 ·6H 2 O-based composite materials incorporating binders were developed for the first time using a mixing and shaping method, which can withstand over 100 thermal cycles without structural disintegration. The developed composite material delivered an average energy density of ~678 J/g over 100 cycles, indicating excellent thermal cycling stability. The composite showed faster dehydration kinetics and a lower activation energy than pure SrBr 2 ·6H 2 O. Furthermore, the granulation method was established for scaling up the SrBr 2 ·6H 2 O-based composite material manufacturing. Further system-level experimental results proved that the composite material granules are competitive for thermal energy storage with a temperature lift of ~37 °C. The combination of material formulation, scalable manufacturing method development and the system-level results facilitates the improvement of the readiness of thermochemical energy storage technology. • The binder maintains the structure of Sr_V-T composite over 100 cycles. • The average energy density of the composite achieved ~678 J/g over cycling. • The dehydration activation energy of the Sr_V-T composite is 64.65 kJ/mol. • A granulation method was developed to scale up the manufacturing of Sr-CTCM. • The temperature lift in the TES system during discharging reached up to 37 °C.
