Key Points

  • To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of unilateral MRgHIFU thalamotomy for essential tremor in patients aged 80 and older.
  • Utilized unilateral MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (MRgHIFU) thalamotomy
  • Included patients aged 80 years or older
  • Measured outcomes related to tremor severity and disability
  • Assessed complication rates post-treatment
  • Showed significant improvements in tremor control and patient disability
  • Reported a low rate of complications
  • Endorsed the role of age-specific metrics in evaluating neuromodulation treatments

Abstract

Unilateral MRgHIFU thalamotomy is a safe and effective noninvasive treatment for ET in patients ≥ 80 years of age. It results in significant improvements in tremor and disability, with a low complication rate. These findings support its consideration for older patients who are ineligible for invasive procedures and highlight the importance of age-specific metrics in neuromodulation outcomes research.
