Observations on Escherichia coli led to tbe conclusion that the phenomena observed when organisms are transferred from H2O to D2O should not be ascribed merely to the toxicity of the rare isotope, for they occur under the reversed conditions as well. Water is apparently toxic to organisms grown in D2O or in H2O.
