Abstract

Dental professionals are at increased occupational risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens such as human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus. Post-exposure prophylaxis is essential for preventing infections following exposure; however, dental students’ knowledge and adherence to post-exposure prophylaxis protocols remain uncertain. A survey of 962 undergraduate and intern dental students from 19 public and private dental colleges in Saudi Arabia, evaluated PEP knowledge, perceptions, and practices using an online questionnaire. Data were analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. Only 46.4% of participants met the predefined ≥ 60% knowledge threshold for post-exposure prophylaxis, with many misconceptions identified. While 73.6% had a positive view of post-exposure prophylaxis, only 38.5% had formal training. Many rated their knowledge and confidence highly but perceived the dental curriculum as insufficient. Factors like gender, prior training, and clinical experience were linked to better post-exposure prophylaxis knowledge, highlighting the need for mandatory education. Gaps in post-exposure prophylaxis knowledge and training persist among dental students in Saudi Arabia, despite generally positive perceptions. These findings highlight the urgent need for standardized and mandatory post-exposure prophylaxis education to improve occupational safety.
