BackgroundPain is a vital sign and, in critically ill patients, reflects both their physiological state and the need for timely interventions to ensure Comfort and well-being 1.Effective pain assessment and treatment are essential in Intensive care units, requiring a coordinated approach that integrates Pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies 2.Continuous monitoring complications, reduces adverse events, and improves Clinical outcomes 2,3,4.Rigorous pain assessment is the basis of humanized care and a fundamental right of the patient 2,4.This study aimed to analyze pain assessment practices in critically il patients in Intensive care units. Materials and methodsA retrospective review of 100 Intensive Care Unit patient records from 2022-2023 was conducted using the B-Simple Health record system.Descriptive statistics were performed using IBM SPSS to assess the frequency and effectiveness of pain assessments, including re-evaluation following Pharmacological interventions.Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Ethics committee. ResultsPain was documented in 39% of cases in 2022, increasing to 42% in 2023.Combined Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions enhanced management effectiveness from 36% in 2022 to 47% in 2023.Among medical patients, pain assessment on admission improved from 95% to 100% and re-evaluation within one hour of Pharmacological intervention from 13% to 46%.Surgical patients were assessed 100% on admission and every two hours during the first six hours, re-evaluation increased from 10% in 2022 to 53% in 2023.These findings demonstrate significant improvements in pain recognition and management, reflecting increased staff awareness and adherence to best practices 1,3.Despite progress, consistency in documentation and timely re-evaluation remains suboptimal, indicating areas for further improvement 1. ConclusionsPain management is a core component of Nursing care in intensive care units, directly impacting patient outcomes and quality of life. The observed improvements between 2022 and 2023 highlight the effectiveness of integrated strategies while underscoring the need for ongoing nurse training and structured Clinical supervision.Strengthening evidence-based practices and standardizing pain assessment protocols can further enhance patient-centered, humanized care in critical care settings.
