Abstract: Gina Litherland is an artist of the American Midwest involved with the surrealist group in Chicago since the late 1970s. This essay offers the trajectory of her work, which is principally concerned with the relationship between humans and the natural world. In addressing this issue, she has developed a unique approach to her subject matter as she looks back to medieval and Renaissance modes of representation in conjunction with surrealist techniques as a means to explore mythic and folkloric themes, often taken from literary or popular culture, that critically highlight the ecological crisis of our times.
