Analysis of pause alternations reveals variations in pitch phoneme occurrence during speech tempo changes.
3.1. P ause alternations and minimal pause groups . There are sequences of phonemes bounded by the pause phoneme #. Except for some utterances consisting of a monosyllabic interjection, such as /ıče?/ ‘ugh!‘, such groups include at least one occurrence of at least two of the four pitch phonemes; some groups include more than one occurrence of one or more of the pitch phonemes. In speech at ordinary tempos, pitch phoneme 1 occurs only after or before pause; at very slow tempos, however, pitch 1 sometimes appears with an internal syllable which at more usual tempos is pronounced on pitch level 2.
