The traditional treatment of verbs, both by native and foreign grammarians, arranges the verbs into conjugation classes according to the vocalic endings of verb forms which are called variously ‘base’, ‘stem’, ‘line-forms’, or just ‘form’. The lack of a precise terminology is due to the fact that verb forms which are actually bases, as well as independent words, are grouped into one conjugation class. This subject has been discussed in §1 The Problem, but it is so basic to the understanding of the traditional method of analysis that it will be given here in some detail.
