Examines water quality in rural Bama, highlighting critical issues for public health and safety.
This study examined and analyzed the state of water supply, the physical and chemical components of human consumable water in the study area. 26 water samples from motorized boreholes; manual boreholes (hand pumps) cement-screened dug wells and hand-dug wells/earth dams were collected and analyzed using five parameters these are; the pH, EC, Mg++, Ca++ and Na++. The t test and the ANOVA was used to show the physiochemical differences and variations between the open and the closed water supply sources. In conclusion, the findings revealed that there is no physical and chemical difference and no variation between the water supply sources found in the area. However, the study further observed that 98% of the water supply sources in the study area are below the World Health Organization (WHO) water quality and sanitation standards. In line with these facts, the study, therefore, recommended that there should be tripartite government commitment to clean rural water supply. Finally, the study suggested for further research into water-related problems such as poor water quality and water borne diseases.
