Archaeological evaluation discovers no features in 11 trenches, indicating significant modern disturbance.
11 trenches were excavated in level spits using a 360 excavator equipped with a toothless bucket, under the constant supervision and instruction of the monitoring archaeologist. Machine excavation proceeded until either the archaeological horizon or the natural geology was exposed. Where necessary, the base of the trench/surface of archaeological deposits were cleaned by hand. Spoil from machine stripping and hand-excavated archaeological deposits was visually scanned for the purposes of finds retrieval. Artefacts were collected and bagged by context. The evaluation was commissioned as part of archaeological works undertaken in compliance with a planning condition on a proposed residential development of the site. The evaluation comprised 11 trenches. The evaluation identified no archaeological features or deposits. Significant truncation due to modern disturbance and layers of made ground were identified in 9 trenches, which explains the lack of preservation of archaeological features.
