Workshop outlines activities using astronomy to enhance mental well-being, focusing on community empowerment and accessibility.
This document outlines the "Astronomy for Mental Health" (AfMH) initiative, a Flagship 2 project by the International Astronomical Union’s Office of Astronomy for Development (OAD).Overview of AfMH The OAD leverages astronomy’s multidisciplinary resources to advance sustainable development, with the AfMH flagship specifically aiming to improve mental well-being. Recognizing the global mental health challenges - exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic - the project utilizes stargazing and educational activities to foster restoration and awe. Key objectives include: Empowering communities and individuals to reach their full potential. Ensuring accessibility by promoting low-cost activities like naked-eye stargazing. Grounding practices in research by collaborating with mental health professionals. Fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to substantiate astronomy's therapeutic impacts. Theoretical Framework The project is supported by literature suggesting that exposure to nature and awe-inspiring experiences reduces stress and restores mental capacity. It integrates these concepts with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT encourages psychological flexibility through: Cognitive Defusion: Observing thoughts without being ruled by them. Acceptance: Being willing to experience difficult thoughts and feelings. Values and Commitment: Identifying what is important and taking values-based action. Planetary Self-Care Activities The guide includes structured, 30-minute activities inspired by planets, each focusing on specific therapeutic objectives: Mercury: Mindfulness for present-moment awareness. Venus: Visualization for self-worth. Earth: Eco-connection for grounding. Mars: Resilience through overcoming challenges. Jupiter: Journaling for reflection and goal setting. Saturn: Structured self-care habits. Uranus: Exploring unconventional relaxation. Neptune: Nurturing dreams and intentions. Pluto: Personal empowerment and individuality.
