Examines archaeological features in South Perrott Reservoir, indicating historical sediment presence.
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Geotechnics Ltd (The Client), to undertake an archaeological watching brief at South Perrott Reservoir, Dorset, centred on NGR ST 47717 06293. The watching brief monitored and recorded seven geotechnical test pits, carried out in advance of improvement works at South Perrott Reservoir. Historic Ordnance Survey mapping indicates test pits 8 and 9 were located at the northern tip of a historic fishpond adjacent to its embayment wall. The deposits encountered within these test pits provided tentative evidence for in-situ pond sediments, overlain by a later deliberate infill episode. No archaeological features or deposits were encountered in the remaining five test pits. A single sherd of post-medieval pottery was recovered from the topsoil of test pit 7.
